A Photogrammetric Method for the Assessment of Facial Morphology in Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Screening
نویسندگان
چکیده
Photogrammetry has been introduced as an alternative to direct measurements to obtain facial distances for a variety of anthropometric applications. We apply photogrammetry to assist in the screening of children for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). We have developed a stereo-photogrammetric image acquisition platform to obtain digital photographs of 6 to 7 year-old children, and image processing algorithms to extract the eye features required for FAS screening from these photographs. Images are calibrated using the Direct Linear Transform. Eye features are extracted by examining peak and valley maps to locate the eyes and extract the iris contour, and applying a genetic algorithm to match cubic splines to eye contours. * Corresponding author.

Background: Alcohol is a potent teratogen and alcohol use in pregnancy and the periconception period can cause many complications in mother, fetus and neonate. Discussion: Alcohol in the mother's blood passes through the placenta to the baby through the umbilical cord. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and a range of lifelong disorders. Alcohol-related birth ...

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a permanent birth defect syndrome caused by maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. It is characterised by growth deficiency, central nervous system damage/dysfunction, and a unique cluster of minor facial anomalies. To assess the effectiveness of fetal alcohol syndrome prevention efforts, one must be able to estimate accurately the prevalence of fetal ...
متن کاملEye Contour Extraction For Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Screening
Conventional screening for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in children involves time-consuming and intrusive facial distance measurements. We are developing an alternative method that will allow automatic measurement of the relevant distances from a pair of stereo photographs, as a screening aid. This paper describes a method for automatic extraction from such photographs of the points on the eyes used ...
